hadn't run the Creeks up the creek
Language of the child narrator
Lee's use here in Scout's narration of colloquial expression ('up the creek'), combined with a punning reference to a Native American tribe, both help to characterise her as a naive childlike narrator who goes off on a story tangent. The humour is also childlike in its reference to a serious historical event.
